Random ashlar is stonemason-ready stones meant for patterns of rectangular stones set without continuous joints and laid up without drawn patterns. Essentially, the stones are laid in an irregular horizontal pattern consisting of stones with near 90-degree angles, typically with a joining material such as mortar to bind the stones together. Mainly consisting of stones of different heights and widths, the combinations are virtually limitless. Ashlar masonry has been used for thousands of years, dating back to pyramids in ancient Egypt.
