What are random ashlar stones?

Random ashlar is stonemason-ready stones meant for patterns of rectangular stones set without continuous joints and laid up without drawn patterns. Essentially, the stones are laid in an irregular horizontal pattern consisting of stones with near 90-degree angles, typically with a joining material such as mortar to bind the stones together. Mainly consisting of stones of different heights and widths, the combinations are virtually limitless. Ashlar masonry has been used for thousands of years, dating back to pyramids in ancient Egypt. More locally, you will see our random ashlar stones throughout most of the Chicagoland area, from historic Joliet and Lemont buildings to older buildings in Chicago.

Because random ashlar stones fit tightly, the resulting structures are tenacious and unyielding, as evidenced by the countless historic buildings still standing. Consisting solely of our historic Joliet/Lemont limestone, you can rest assured that this product will stand the test of time. Along with longevity, you can purchase a piece of history. Our random ashlar stones add a perfectly rugged, timeless accent to any structure, both indoors and outdoors.
